IMPORTANT NOTICE
August 6, 2009
Attention: AUMA members
Though internet delivery is changing as grant programs encourage development and technologies improve, the Rural Connectivity Gap Analysis project aims at capturing a snapshot of current service levels. With representatives from Service Alberta, Agriculture & Rural Development, and the AAMDC, the project is meant to define the problem of rural broadband access by overlaying the province with 6km hexagons, and then determining whether the hexagons are served or not-served. Stantec Consulting Ltd. has been selected to conduct the analysis.
Over the course of this analysis, Stantec will work to take into account the research and knowledge that may already exist through provincial departments, municipal governments and internet service providers.
Representatives may be approaching municipalities over the next few months to gather information that may have already been collected. The steering committee encourages all municipalities to share any information or studies regarding the availability of rural broadband in a specific area.
Information from the gap analysis should be available in early fall.
