Job Description : 

General Accountability:
Accountable for the development, coordination and implementation of the Town’s horticulture and vegetation management plan.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plant and maintain all town flower beds, barrels, hanging baskets, trees and shrubs
  • Procurement for plant materials
  • Coordinate insect, pest control and weed control with the contracted service provider (Red Deer County)
  • Perform and support horticultural practices that encourage overall plant health and soil nutrition and integrated pest management practices
  • Perform site quality control in flower beds, shrubs beds and forested areas, which includes, but is not limited to removal of weeds, excess leaves, dead plants, pruning of dead growth including trees, cultivation of soil, removal of garbage
  • Maintain an inventory system, analysis of current situation and long term planning
  • Maintain an inventory and planning system regarding the Christmas decorations and light landscaping
  • Investigate complaints and reporting of actions taken
  • Responsible for development and execution of new or existing programs such as:
    • Communities in Bloom
    • Dutch elm disease awareness program
    • Work with the community for public awareness of water conservation (i.e. rain barrels)
    • Coordinate and work with an arborist in the proactive maintenance and lifecycle planning of the Town’s urban forest system including boulevard trees and other components
    • Town’s overall beautification projects
    • Town’s tree farm
  • Monitoring and issuing compliance notices to property owners that are non compliant to the Town’s tree bylaw
  • Follow-up remediation to non compliant properties
  • Coordinate green space maintenance and turf development including fertilizer application and reseeding as required
  • Participate in the recruitment and supervision of seasonal staff.
  • Provide assistance in snow clearing duties on an as need basis
  • Work closely within the department regarding reseeding of sports field and other areas

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Horticultural certificate or diploma an asset
  • Minimum of 2 years’ field experience in horticulture and landscape maintenance
  • Experience in Pesticides
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Operators license
