Beaumont is seeking a permanent full-time Level I, or Level II Safety Codes Officer in the building discipline to join our existing team. You would share your considerable expertise and act as a key resource, to ensure the City of Beaumont is providing high quality service to internal and external stakeholders. The Safety Codes Officer will dedicate their time between plan reviews, other in-office work, and inspecting buildings within the municipality.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Administers and enforces the Safety Codes Act and related regulations, and City bylaws;
  • Reviews permit applications and issues permits and prepares site inspection reports noting observations and instances of non-compliance for residential projects; 
  • Conducts ongoing site inspections and site evaluations according to applicable Building Codes, and enforce laws guided by the Code as well as review designs, working drawings and material specifications and any changes during construction or renovation;
  • Provides accurate technical information to the public, contractors and staff; and
  • Ensures current legislation and changes are clarified and implemented.

In addition to the tasks listed above, the Level II is also responsible for:

  • Acts as the lead resource for providing accurate technical information to the public, contractors and staff on complex projects, alternative solutions, and escalated inquiries;
  • Reviews permit applications and issue permits, and prepare site inspection reports noting observations and instances of non-compliance for residential and commercial/multi-family projects; 
  • Responsibilities extend to the inspection and identification of violations of regulations and related matters to ensure awareness and remediation of existing issues to achieve necessary compliance; and
  • Ensures current legislation and changes are clarified and implemented.


  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a building safety codes officer is preferable;
  • A valid Certificate of Competency as a Building Safety Codes Officer providing ability to review plans and inspect residential buildings and accessories (i.e. houses, decks, basements, secondary suites, etc.);
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Practical knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office and permitting software;
  • Demonstrated time management, organizational, and decision making ability;
  • Competency in reviewing plans and coordinating with interested parties;
  • Ability to effectively resolve issues and attain corrective measures; 
  • Demonstrated internal and external customer service skills including the ability to build and maintain relationships with industry partners; and
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license.

In addition to the above qualifications the Level II requires:

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a building safety codes officer.
  • Certification to review plans and conduct inspections on complex projects and commercial buildings;
  • Experience mentoring and acting as a lead subject matter expert preferred; 
  • Experience with reviewing and issuing alternative solutions in compliance with the Code; and
  • Currently a Level III, or willingness to work towards a Level III, will be considered an asset.

These position will offer the following salary ranges: Level I $76,811-$100,222, Level II $84,718-$110,537 which include a temporary market adjustment to be reviewed annually. Starting salary is negotiable within the range based on level, suitable experience and qualifications. The City of Beaumont offers a competitive benefits package, enrolment in LAPP and a 35-hour work week.
