Safety Codes Officer One (1) Permanent Full-time Position

The City of Fort Saskatchewan is looking for a professional, friendly and self-motivated individual to join the Planning & Development Department. Reporting to the Safety Codes Officer Team Lead, the Safety Codes Officer performs compliance monitoring in one or more of the following disciplines: Building, Electrical and Plumbing/Gas/PSDS. Preference will be given to those applicants with experience and qualifications to perform electrical and building inspections. This position interprets and enforces the Safety Codes Act, Permit Regulations and all applicable codes, standards and City bylaws and policies impartially and tactfully.

The Safety Codes Officer provides administrative, technical review, and Code compliance monitoring services for buildings; conducts plans examinations and issues permits; investigates and responds to complaints, questions, and/or inquiries related to permit applications, installations, code requirements, standards, the Safety Codes Act, and City Bylaws; and provides compliance monitoring of buildings and structures.

The successful candidate must be a certified Safety Codes Officer in their respective discipline in accordance with the Safety Codes Act. Certifications must be maintained and training upgraded in accordance with the requirements of the Alberta Safety Codes Council. This position requires a minimum of three (3) years’ experience conducting inspections. The Safety Codes Officer must be able to work in a high work volume, sensitive environment that requires tact, diplomacy, accuracy, judgement and strong communication and problem solving skills to ensure safety compliance and strong customer service. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write technical reports is required. Excellent coordination, work scheduling and time management skills are essential. Candidates will need to have strong competencies in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook as well as GIS and City software. The successful candidate will have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record. The successful candidate will be required to provide a current Driver’s Abstract at time of interview. There is also an opportunity for casual employment. The City of Fort Saskatchewan offers a competitive compensation package with a salary range of $86,775 to $102,063 per annum.
