NEWS RELEASE: AUMA responds to today’s provincial cabinet shuffle

The Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) welcomes the news that Ric McIver will continue in his role as Minister of Municipal Affairs with the Government of Alberta.

“Minister McIver will provide much-needed stability and continuity to this vitally important role,” said AUMA President Barry Morishita. “We are relieved municipal governments do not need to go back to 'square one' yet again and create working relationships with a new minister.”

While AUMA is encouraged Minister McIver retains his current role, more work needs to be done. We need to arrive at a common understanding of the challenges faced by our province's municipalities and put an end to the downloading of costs and responsibilities that has occurred over the last decade or more.

“We are under no illusion that this will be easy,” said Morishita. “The AUMA calls for a doubling down on co-operation and collaboration between the Government of Alberta and municipalities so that, together, they can deliver the high-quality programs, services and infrastructure Albertans need and deserve.”

Alberta’s municipalities are eager to help rebuild our province’s economy and get people back to work.

“For Alberta to achieve economic and social prosperity, municipalities must be meaningfully involved in the provincial government’s plans and actions,” said Morishita. “Municipal governments need to be fully engaged partners in Alberta’s recovery.”
